Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba after a lifetime of studying martial arts and philosophy. Aikido is often translated as "the Way of unifying energy" or as "the Way of harmonious spirit".

By blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on, the aikidoka (aikido practitioner) leads the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks.

Many of Ueshiba's senior students had different approaches to aikido, and today aikido is found all over the world in a number of styles. However, they all share the techniques learned directly from Ueshiba.

The Thanet Martial Arts Centre teaches the Tomiki style of Aikido founded by Kenji Tomiki (1900-1979).

Tomiki Aikido is a style that combines some of the competitive excitement of Judo with the spiritual serenity of traditional Aikido.
