Karate is one of the most popular martial arts in the UK.
Originating in China, then spreading to Okinawa and Japan, Karate is well known for it's distinctive punching and kicking techniques.
Thanet Martial Arts Centre has regular classes in Shotokan Karate, one of the five traditional styles.
Shotokan was created from the teachings of Gichin Funakoshi (1868–1957) who, after studying the main styles of the time combined them to create his own, striving for simplicity while maintaining the ideals of Karate. It is Funakoshi who is thought to have first introduced Karate from the island of Okinawa to mainland Japan.
Funakoshi wrote: "The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of the participant."
